Introduction
We all look forward to welcoming a furry friend into our lives, but this can be clouded by the rising number of puppy scams in South Africa. These scams exploit unsuspecting animal lovers by taking their money without delivering a promised puppy. This guide equips you with the knowledge to identify and avoid these scams, ensuring a safe and joyful experience when adopting your new furry companion.
While doing my research, I came across a website called petplace.co.za, who seem to offer help with finding puppies and even have an article about puppy scams. However, after looking into them a little further with a simple search online, I discovered that they are even scamsters! Please, be very careful people! Even these websites who, seemingly are trying to help, are scammers!
I have written this article simply to help, I am not a breeder and do not sell puppies. I am a dog trainer who has just seen too many people getting scammed.
Here is a good Facebook group to join to do more research about puppy scams in South Africa
Red Flags to Watch Out For:
Unrealistic Offers: Deeply discounted puppies are often a red flag. Genuine breeders typically charge fair prices based on breed, health checks, and pedigree.
Online-Only Interaction: Insisting on virtual interactions without the option of a face-to-face meeting or video call with the puppy and its parents is a major red flag. Scammers often use stolen photos and videos. The videos will often come without sound, and photos without showing any human faces.
Pressure Tactics: Urgency to complete the transaction without sufficient time for research is a tactic used to cloud your judgment. A genuine breeder will answer your questions and guide you through the process comfortably.
Fake Documents: Beware of sellers readily offering copies of ID or vet documents. These can be stolen or fabricated. Often the sell will claim to be a woman too.
Unverified Information: Verify breeder details and kennel registrations to ensure they are legitimate.
Protecting Yourself:
Video Calls are Essential: A live video call is crucial. See the puppies and their parents interacting in real-time. Ask to see specific details like the breeder holding a puppy.
Research and Verification: Research the breeder's reputation online and verify their contact information. Don't hesitate to ask questions about the puppy's lineage, health checks, and socialization.
Meet in Person Ideally: If possible, arrange a personal visit to see the puppies and their environment. This allows you to assess their health and living conditions directly. When I bought my belgain malinois from a breeder in Cape Town, I flew down from KZN just to go and meet him and the puppies, with their parents.
Secure Payment Methods: For online transactions, utilize secure payment platforms offering buyer protection. Avoid sending money directly through bank transfers or other untraceable methods.
Beware of Fake Testimonials: Don't rely solely on online testimonials. Scammers can easily fabricate these.
Common Scam Tactics:
Emotional Appeal: Scammers prey on your desire for a pet by using guilt-tripping tactics or claiming the puppies need a loving home urgently.
Fake Breeder Identities: Scammers often impersonate reputable breeders, using stolen names or photos.
"Lost in Transit" Scam: This involves claiming the puppy is stuck at customs or with a transport company, requiring additional fees for "clearance."
Fake Registration Documents: Scammers may offer fake registration certificates. Verify registration details directly with kennel clubs.
What to Do if Scammed:
Stop Payment Immediately: If you've already sent money, act fast to stop payment with your bank.
Report the Scam: Report the scammer to the authorities and relevant online scam databases. Provide all details you have, including screenshots of conversations and bank transactions. I have added in a list of places to report to at the bottom of the article.
Share Your Experience: Help others by sharing your experience on social media to raise awareness about puppy scams.
Remember:
Trust Your Gut: If something seems suspicious, it probably is. Don't be afraid to walk away.
Reliable Breeders: Seek breeders with a good reputation and positive online reviews.
Patience is Key: Finding the perfect puppy takes time. Don't rush into decisions due to pressure tactics.
I recommend finding someone with the breed of dog you want, and asking them where they got the dog from. You can also ask your local vet or dog trainer for help. We offer help in finding and choosing pups for our clients.
By following these steps and prioritizing responsible pet adoption, you can avoid puppy scams and welcome a healthy, happy puppy into your life.
